Words are Forever, not Diamonds

Write a love letter that she won’t forget

I still remember the first love letter I ever received, I was 10.

He wrote a few simple words on the back of a dinosaur valentine’s day card and dropped in the tissue box turned robotic love time machine my mom and I stayed up all night crafting.

“I like how I feel when you look at me.” — Matt

I couldn’t blame him for being brief, the character limit on the back of those 3”x3” cards was limited.

While my memories surrounding the days and weeks before and after are fleeting, I still remember his eyes staring at me across the schoolyard, I was sporting my favorite Ninja Turtle shirt that day.

Fast forward 5 years later, I had my first boyfriend. I was 15.

He was the bad-boy type, who skipped classes often to get high in his black, used sports car. We would spend hours cruising the streets with the windows down listening to the best of 2000s hip-hop too loudly — 50 Cent, Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins, Petey Pablo, Chingy, Nelly. Though not in the dead of winter. It was brutally cold in Fargo, North Dakota.

“Meet me at my house after school.” — Clayton
