I think sex scenes in fiction make a lot of sense if they are authentic to the story line/there’s a love interest. It’s an intimate detail that tells the reader something new about the characters and in many ways, makes them more real in our eyes.

I also agree with you that the 50 shade series were badly written, though the author really understood the audience. I guess everyone wants to feel a little naughty sometimes…
